Hands-On Preview: Dragon Is Dead Feels Like Dead Cells Meets Diablo

This 2D side-scrolling roguelite has a ton of promise.

From the beginning, the team planned on the early access window lasting for about a full year so that they could fine-tune the game’s balance, address player concerns and feedback, and continue to developDragon Is Deadinto its best-possible iteration ahead of a full version 1.0 release.

Thankfully, this full version is quickly approaching on the horizon.

Dragon Is Deadwill wrap up its early access phase andrelease into its full 1.0 version on July 15, 2025. Fans that have already played the early version of the game should be excited that this full release is less than a month away, so there’s not too much longer to wait.

In addition to revealing this date, the team has also provided a press release which further highlights all of the changes, additions, and improvements that players can expect upon full game release.

Is This 2025’s Sleeper Hit In The 2D Space?

If you’ve already checked outDragon Is Deadin early access, you’re likely part of the growing group of players that are becoming increasingly excited about the game’s full release.

I was able to go hands-on with the title last month at the LVL UP Expo in Las Vegas, and it was easily the game I walked away the most excited for that was shown off on the show floor of the PM Studios booth.

Dragon Is Deadseems like a particularly addicting “one more run”-type roguelite sidescroller. It plays a lot likeDead Cells, but infuses a robust RPG system and interesting narrative which really could elevate the game into truly special territory.
