One key reason that the overall series has grown to be so popular is the immense success of the anime, which helped the mangaka to come up with more additions to his one-of-a-kind story. Dragon Ball Super, which was released back in 2013, has proved to be an outstanding addition to the franchise and resonated with the mangaka’s grand vision.

The show continued to tell the story of Goku and his friends, where he fought even stronger antagonists than those featured inDBZ.While the Saiyan continued to come out on top in his epic battles, there was one part of the Galactic Patrol Prisoner arc that posed great trouble to Toyotarou while working on the draft.

Moro’s Character Design inDragon Ball SuperMade Toyotarou Rethink His Life Decisions

Even though some fans criticize Akira Toryiama’sDragon Ball Superfor featuring characters with broken power levels, fans can’t stop reading the series because of its intriguing storyline. The series went on to expand, where it continued to show more interesting antagonists that would take away the breath of its readers.

One such villain is Moro, the dark wizard from the Galactic Patrol Prisoner arc. The battle against this villain pushed the limits of the two Saiyans, Goku and Vegeta, making the fans feel that in a long time, the series has featured another iconic villain likeFrieza.

Everything about the character was deemed perfect, making him look flawless. However, achieving that feat was not easy because during an interview viaKanzenshuu, Toyotarou explains how drawing the villain made him burn the midnight oil. He envisioned the character to be“pure evil”and went all out in designing an evil character by using the body of a goat as a base that is a“common visual motif for Western demons.”

The interviewer asked the artist about one particular aspect when drawing the villain. Without much trouble, he answered,“That would be the horns.”He explained how the unique design posed a major challenge despite the idea being his own. Thus, making him rethink his decisions that kind of made him “regret” it. He said,

A panel from the DBS manga

Unlike normal goats’ horns, they have a complex design where they twist outward at the ends. Even though it’s my own design, they’re super difficult to draw, so I kind of regret making them that way. (laughs) It’s hard to get the balance just right without a 3D reference. I went looking for goat models, but couldn’t find one that worked.

He further added,

Eventually I figured I’d just have to make one myself, so I sculpted the horns on my own. At first I tried just tacking a bit of kneaded eraser to a goat figure’s horns, but eventually had to break out the putty and do some serious sculpting.

The mangaka emphasized how drawing the horns has never been any easier as he has a point of reference to work on, and the“horn-drawing has fallen into place,”making him burst into laughter.

Akira Toriyama’s Ideas For the Galactic Patrol Prisoner Arc“Shocked”Toyotarou

In the same interview, the interviewer decided to ask Toyotarou-San about his approach to the iconic arc and what sorts of conversation he had with the Godfather of anime. The manga artist replied that, for the most part, he was shocked by the kind of ideas that Toriyama-Sensei offered.

During our meetings, I was shocked by the kinds of ideas Toriyama-sensei offered, as only the original author could. I feel like we were able to start in once we were both convinced we would have a good story.

He added how it also involved some future, for which he can’t give too many details, but it is supposed to be something that fans should look forward to.

This involves plans for later, so I can’t say too much, but there are certain things… like one of the new characters’ secrets, that I don’t think anyone but Toriyama-sensei could have come up with. Please look forward to that.
