The spell-slingers ofDragon Age: The Veilguard, mages are your main casters, chucking spells of ice, fire, lightning, and more from afar. Using mana as their primary resource, they certainly know how to pack a magical punch.
Dragon Age: The Veilguard Every Party Member, Ranked
With seven compelling companions at your beck and call, they can’t all be the best!
With spells that can do massive amounts of damage and spells that excel at area and enemy control, mages have a fair number of abilities to choose from on their class tree. So, regardless of your specialization, let’s take a look at their best ones.

Great Ball Of Fire
Damage Type
Any high-level mage that knows how to wield fire should know how to call down a meteor, so there’s no wonder this destructive spell is here.
The meteor itself looks great andthe animation of it crashing down feels impactfulbetween the sound and visual designs. That said, calling down a meteor could have looked even more devastating than it is.

So, even though it’s good enough to land a spot on this list, the missed potential lands it the last spot.
7Spirit Bomb
Explosive Souls
Spirit Bomb – the ability tied to theDeath Caller specialization–leans heavily into its necromantic themes. Siphon the life essence of your enemies only to follow it up with an explosive end, dealing more damage based on how much you siphoned.
While this isn’t the flashiest spell in the world, it nonethelesslooks and feels menacing. You are removing a creature’s life essence, converting that magic into something more volatile, and then blasting said creature with it.

Cruel in the best way possible.
6Ice Blast
More Like Ice Spikes…
Ice Blast gives the immediate impression of shooting a target with a big icicle or a ray of frost. However, Dragon Age: The Veilguard’s Ice Blast puts a neat little aesthetic twist on it.
Dragon Age: The Veilguard: 13 Essential Beginner Tips
If you want to step up and lead your band of heroes, you’ll need to know a thing or two.
Instead of either of the former, you send forth spiked icy ground thatdamages all enemies in its trajectory and knocks back any at the endof the spell’s path.

This makes the spell feel much more rugged and brutal, and that’s not even mentioning how much better it looks than a more traditional ice blast. Honestly, the name “Ice Blast” somewhat undersells the ability.
5Frost Nova
A Classic Spell Done Right
0, but 60-second cooldown
Frost Nova isone of the most classic frost spellsa mage can have, and it’s no surprise it made this list. When it comes to these popular spells, how they look and feel are two of the most important factors.

As you would expect, Frost Nova is a wonderful area control tool as itfreezes all enemies around you in a wide radius, but the developers really nailed its aesthetic.
you may see and hear the short build-up of icy wind swirling around you and then exploding outward, freezing the ground just as much as the enemies caught in the spell. Truly a treat for the eyes.
4Wall of Fire
You Shall Not Pass!
Wall of Fire is… exactly what it sounds like. But, don’t let that fool you into thinking it’s an average spell.
As with Frost Nova, Wall of Fire isn’t exactly unique or a new spell invention, making how it looks and feels all the more important, and the game definitely delivers on those fronts.
The initial summoning of the wall of fire is explosive, bright, and all-around spectacular. Instead of it all rising at once, a very neat detail is that it takes on the appearance ofa chain explosion of five runic circlesthat – very quickly – blend into a single wall of roaring flames.
It happens fast, but it is beautiful to watch in those split seconds.
3Void Blade
Slashing Reality In Style
Electricity
Void Blade – the ability tied to theSpellblade specialization– is greatly influenced by the Antivan Crow mages who likely invented this spell, which immediately sets expectations ofedgy and cool visuals.
Dragon Age: The Veilguard: All Fen’Haral Altar Locations
Fen’Haral Altars reward players with skill points in Dragon Age: The Veilguard. Here’s how to find all of them.
This spell is agap close(something that is actually a useful thing to have as a Spellblade mage), aknockback, allowing you to play to precipices, and aheavy damage dealer, which makes it viable in all situations.
Void Blade’s usefulness gameplay-wise aside, the spell also looks incredible. Youslash a tear in reality with your electrified blades, letting loose a flock of magical crows.
What’s better than deadly magic? Deadly magic that has style.
The Thunderbringer Has Arrived
You might as well call yourself Zeus at this point, because Tempest, quite simply, calls down a lightning storm upon a selected zone, providingbig damage and excellent area control.
And boy does it look… electrifying.
This spell’s sound and visual designs are phenomenal, but a specific aspect of the latter that truly pulls it together is the shadowed lighting. Something about it adds such an intimidating and menacing layer to the spell that brings it home.
After seeing Tempest in action, all rogues should be second-guessing their mastery over lightning with their own abilities of similar nature.
1Entropic Sphere
It’s Just… So Pretty
Taking the number one spot on this list is Entropic Sphere – the ability tied to theEvoker specialization– and for a couple of reasons.
First and foremost,it is stunning to look at. The different shades of purple, coupled with the shooting stars swirling around the central sphere, are jaw-dropping. You had better hope there are no adversaries behind you when you cast this spell because you will be too distracted by its beauty to react to them in time.
Secondly, it’s extremely effective from a gameplay standpoint. The mini-galaxy you summon slowly sucks all enemies into it and eventually explodes gloriously, sending those enemies flying in all directions.
Thus, it acts as a movingtool of displacement and area control, andends in a knockbackeffect which is wonderful to have regardless of whether or not you’re fighting on a cliff’s edge. You are a mage after all, and keeping your distance is usually crucial no matter what.
