James Gunn’sSuperman: Legacyis well into its pre-production, with a shooting set to occur in March of 2024. As the studio gears up to launch the reboot of its cinematic universe, rumors and leaks have begun to trickle out as fans and insiders gear up for the film.

As it turns out, James Gunn himself, via Threads, has confirmed that wardrobe fitting for Superman was done using the “previous suit” (assumed to be referring to Henry Cavill’s), although it seems that David Cornesweth, slated to play Superman, was too tall for the suit. It has also been revealed (through sources other than Gunn) that Cornesweth will be debuting a new Superman suit.

Superman’s costume might be radically different from that of Henry Cavill’s version
Twitter user@Danimalishtweeted out, claiming to have known someone working on the project, that the Superman costume is ‘not what fans are expecting’.
Not that this matters at all, but I heard from a friend who is working on LEGACY that the Superman suit is not gonna be what we’re expecting and is very curious for how fans are gonna react. Take that for what you will.https://t.co/0B7oaceYo5

Superman has had a multitude of costumes throughout his comics history. Some are more iconic than others, like the traditional black suits worn by the character after his resurrection. There are several variations on his classic red, white, and yellow suit as well, with the symbol on his chest being more goofy or serious depending on the story being told. While one can assume that the suit will not be radically different, it will be leagues apart from the suit that Henry Cavill wore for his run as Superman.

Superman: Legacyis pulling from similar sources
The three major sources forSuperman: Legacywere revealed by James Gunn to be quite similar. The costumes that appear in these stories are quite similar, but the one that appears inAll-Star Supermanhas the distinction of carrying the crest of the House of El on its cape, as opposed to it being plain red, as it is inSuperman: BrainiacandSuperman: Birthright.
While these stories have a lot going on for them, the focus of these stories aligns well with what Gunn has been sharing. Superman stories in recent times have tried to make the character weaker or pit him against stronger opponents to make him more interesting, but there are ways of working with the Superman character without turning it into something out ofDragon Ball Z.

Gunn’sSuperman: Legacyseems to be shaping up to be a quintessential Superman story without turning it into a slugfest between man and concrete by way of CGI. Legacy will hopefully be able to introduce us to a world that has the maturity of DC comics but doesn’t have to deconstruct its characters to maintain that mature and nuanced tone.
