In a candid interview with Polygon Team, the producer ofDandadanhas dropped some interesting details about the creative direction that the project will pursue. He elaborated on what exactly the team had envisioned when working on the series and pointed out its unique approach to storytelling.
Capturing The “Everyday Action” Is The Key Essence of The Anime Adaptation
Dandadanis making waves in the anime industry with a touch of uniqueness, breaking the molds set by the iconic series,One Piece. This begins with “everyday action”, a filmmaking technique that focuses on recording the subtle, mundane interactions that breathe life into characters.According to Producer Hiroshi Kamei, this direction is extremely vital for the adherence to the tone and the essentials of the original manga.

The animation team focuses on small movements in everyday life in order to convey emotions and relationships through action and not dialogue. This follows much more dynamic movement and animation than that what we usually get in conventional anime. He says,
We wanted to verify that we put a focus on those, more than normal anime, so then you will see more movement in the animation compared to a normal anime.

To Kamei, the result of all this is authenticity, and making the interactions between characters really believable and immersive. In doing so,Dandadanhas promised to be one breath of fresh air in a viewing experience unique from other anime series within this genre.
An Idea of “Lead Scenes”, And How It’s Used inDandadan
InDandadan, the animators used a technique called “lead scenes” as a manner of storytelling to depict the progression of the relationship between the main protagonists, Momo and Okarun. These scenes are specifically designed to pay attention to the evolving relationship between the main characters. The creators wanted to visually represent the growth and changes in this dynamic involving Momo and Okarun through this approach.

Lead scenes, as defined by Producer Hiroshi Kamei, are bookmarks that highlight the development of the relationship through mirrored moments. The most jarringly parallel scenes ofDandadanwould be when Momo hands Okarun a magazine, and then Okarun returns clothes to Momo because he is embarrassed. This shows that the relationship between the characters has evolved from being a school friendship into something much deeper.
At the end of the episode, when Okarun hands his clothes back to Momo because he’s embarrassed. Those two scenes are very similar in how they’re shown, because it shows how their relationship changed from the time they were at school, from the time they experienced the whole supernatural stuff afterwards.

This is indeed a deep and thoughtful storytelling technique that adds depth and emotional resonance to the story. These lead scenes are drafted to keep the continuity and contrasting moments in mind where the subtleties of the characters’ relationship can be perceived. By interposing and changing these scenes, the animation firmly drives the emotional context of the story.
Dandadanis available to watch onCrunchyroll&Netflix.
