The JRPG fan of yesteryear probably let out a high-pitched squeal just like I did when first stepping into the overworld ofClair Obscur: Expedition 33. It’s one of those features I used to love back in the ’90s, and always pushed me to explore the game to the fullest.

Luckily, Expedition 33’s overworld isn’t just for show. It hides countless secrets, items, hidden areas, and even some enemies tougher than your average bunch to really put us through the wringer.

Where To Find the Chromatic Abbest

you’re able to find the Chromatic Abbest inside the Abbest Cave, located in the first region of the game, where Spring Meadows, Gestral Village, and other starting areas are located.

The ideal time to face it, or at least what worked for me, wasafter the events of Old Lumière. Esquie had learned the ability to break corals, so it was easy to swim back to the beginning.

Still, I have friends who beat it out of sheer stubbornness right after recruiting Sciel, one of the party members I’d recommend for this challenge. In the end, it really comes down to your patience and persistence.

Preparing for Chromatic Abbest

My characters were around level 35when I faced this Nevron. It was easier than I expected, so you might be able to beat it at a lower level.

You’ll need a party member with Dark damage skills, which means Sciel is a must, and others with elemental damage since Chromatic Abbest resists physical attacks.

Its attacks aren’t too hard to dodge, but I’d still recommend some defensive Pictos. If going after the beast after the events of Old Lumière, you’ve earned theSecond ChancePicto by defeating Renoir. Equip this Lumina on whoever can hold it, or at least the Picto.

Best Party Composition

I faced Chromatic Abbest with Sciel, Lune, and Monoco. Sciel for her Dark damage, Lune for support and elemental attacks, andMonoco because I was hunting for new skills, so he was a staple.

Still, don’t underestimate the Gestral. Besides being the member with the most versatile skills on the roster, some pack quite a punch. However, in this fight, he played the part of buff and debuffer.

The Continent is full of painted baddies that will knock you back.

The battle is quite straightforward, so there’s no need for too much set-up. Just focus on dishing out damage while patching yourself up, and the win will come eventually.

Best Skills

Your main goal here is to bring all the Dark damage skills you can with Scieland, secondarily, elemental skills since Chromatic Abbest has a natural resistance to physical attacks.

Instead ofapplying Foretellwith Focused Foretell, for instance, go with Marking Card.It applies less Foretell, but the damage is higher since it’s Dark. Plus, it also applies Mark.

Lune can go defensive or offensive, depending on your build. I was pretty beefed up and could dodge Nevron’s attacks just fine, so I used her as an assaulter.

Monoco followed the same idea of attacking whenever possible. I still brought some support skills like Potier Energy to feed the party AP and Ramasseur Bonk, which deals great Break damage and, on top of that, is a Dark element skill.

Party Member

Description

Marking Card

Medium Dark damage. 2 hits. Applies 3 Foretell and Mark.

Firing Shadow

Deals low Dark damage to all enemies. 3 hits. Consumes 1 Foretell per hit for increased damage.

Spectral Sweep

Deals medium single target damage. 2 to 6 hits. Uses weapon’s element. Applies 1 Foretell per hit. Critical Hits apply an additional Foretell.

Healing Light

Heals the targeted ally by 30-50% Health and dispels Status effects. Consumes 2 Earth Stain: Costs 0 AP.

Elemental Trick

Deals low single target Ice, Fire, Lightning, and Earth damage. 4 hits. Critical Hits generate the corresponding Stain.

Consumes all Stains to deal high elemental damage to the target. Can Break if 4 Stains are consumed.

Ramasseur Bonk

Deals low single target Dark damage. 1 hit. Can Break. Agile Mask: fills 20% of the target’s Break Bar.

Potier Energy

Gives 1-3 AP to all allies. Caster Mask: Gives 1 additional AP.

Glaise Earthquakes

Deals medium Earth damage to all enemies. 3 hits. Applies Powerful to self. Heavy Mask: applies Powerful to all allies.

Focus on beating the crap out of the Chromatic Abbest with Sciel, plain and simple. The other party members are just there to support her.

If you stack Foretell and land a solid Firing Shadow, you can break past the 9,999 damagethreshold because it hits three times instead of one. Also, avoid strong one-hit skills since the max damage ceiling will hold you back.

If Sciel is equipped with anelemental weapon, especially Dark, Spectral Sweepbecomes a fantastic skill to build up Foretell stacks, so spam it.

Since my Lune had a crit-focused build,I used Elemental Trick and Mayhem back-to-back, with a healing Light in case things got dicey.

Monoco buffed allies and restored AP, but everything depended on which Mask was active at the time.A Ramasseur Bonk now and thenalso helped keep the damage rolling.

Chromatic Abbest Attack Breakdown

Chromatic Abbest only has three attack types. A basic hit, another where it jumps and hits one target three times, and a spell taken from the Évêque boss, where rocks slowly approach a target.

None of the attacks are hard to dodge or parry, but they can hit hard if they catch you off guard. I chose to parry since I was already used to them, but go with dodging if you’re not confident.

Two of these attacks use generic phrases,so you’ll have to rely on the animation rather than the description, while the spell is clearly displayed as a spell.

Attack Phrase Indicator

Attack Description

“Chromatic Abbest attacks character.”

The Chromatic Abbest will slowly walk toward one character and do a slicing headbutt.

Parry preferable.

“Chromatic Abbest attacks character.” (Jumping)

The Chromatic Abbest will jump thrice in the air and do a 3-hit combo. The first two jumps are close together, while the third is slightly slower.

Dodge or parry.

“Chromatic Abbest casts a spell at character.”

Chromatic Abbest will cast a spell where rocks will rise from the ground, making a path in the direction of a character. The third time it rises, it will hit the character.

As mentioned,I recommend parrying all of the attacks.Their tells are easy to learn and, depending on your level, even if you take a hit, it won’t be enough to take you out.

When the Chromatic Abbest casts its spell, follow the audio rather than the visuals. The rock will rise from the ground twice, making a heavy rumble. On the third tick, that’s your cue to hit the parry button.

How To Beat Chromatic Abbest

Even facing the Chromatic Abbest at level 30+, I noticed it acted before my allies, which indicates that Nevron had boosted its Speed attributes upon leveling up.

Depending on your build, you’ll spend more time responding to the enemy’s attacks than actually dealing damage on your own, but that’s no big deal, especially if you’re a parry master and seize every chance to counter.

Also, know that it has a weak point right in the middle of its forehead that you can shoot to score extra damage, so take your shot, gunslinger, and then get ready tojump into melee combat.

I started the battle by applying Mark with Marking Card and a few Foretell stacks. WithMonoco, it all depends on which Mask he’s wearing. I suggested one skill for Heavy, Agile, and Caster Mask, so just use the upgraded one.

Through friendship, you’ll become much more powerful

If you take damage, heal with Lune. If not, start building up stains with her to prep for Mayhem. you may also go for Burn if that’s your focus.

The best move is to avoid physical damage and zero in on Dark. You can even use Energy Tint with Monoco or Lune to recharge Sciel’s AP.

Once Sciel enters Twilight, you can either build up more Foretell orgo straight for damage. I prefer going for damage, after all, her damage was still capped at 9,999 so no use applying Foretells. I went for Firing Shadows when Sciel entered Twilight and landed almost 27k damage on the Nevron.

I repeated Sciel’s move once or twice, and before long, the sheep was toast. The rewards were on par with my level and my other Pictos, so I’d say it was the perfect time to face him.

How To Beat Chromatic Abbest Early In The Game

If, for any reason whatsoever, you’re a maniac that wants to kill Chromatic Abbest when the game is clearly indicating that it’s a freaking dangerous enemy, thenyeah, you can.

It’s notthathard because, like I said earlier, its attacks are simple to dodge. The real challenge is staying awake during the fight because the boss has about 80k HP, and your damage is peanuts by comparison.

That’s why, without a doubt, the best build to take down Chromatic Abbest early on is a Burn-focused one. I don’t recommend defeating it with just Gustave, Lune, and Maelle in the party. At the very least, make it to Gestral Village, recruit Sciel, and return.

There’s also no point in teaching a strategy here, since your only goal is to stack as many Burn-inflicting skills as possible. With Maelle, use Offensive Switch and Spark repeatedly, or just Spark if the enemy’s too fast and the Burn debuff keeps wearing off.

With Lune, cast Immolation every single time, or Wildfire if it’s already unlocked, while Sciel uses any Dark-element skill you’ve got. Don’t forget to shoot the Nevron’s weak spot, either.

Rinse and repeat until the Chromatic Abbest dies of boredom.Again, I don’t recommend trying this right at the start. However, if you’re dead set on it, know that each party member will gain about 2–3 levels from the win, plus a Picto that’s way above your current level.

Upon killing the Chromatic Abbest, you’ll get the First Offensive Picto, which helped me one-shot most endgame bosses, along with crafting materials, experience, and money.

That’s it. The First Offensive Picto does look quite disposable at first but don’t underestimate its usefulness. Mix it with theAugmented First Strikeand other DPS-focused Pictos, and you’ll win battles before they start.
