While sitcoms once dominated the small screen, they don’t enjoy the same status since the rise of prestige TV, and the boom of streaming has further added to this notion. But amidst the shifting climate in the TV landscape, Chuck Lorre, who deservingly enjoys the status of king of sitcoms, has kept the format relevant, thanks to hits likeThe Big Bang Theoryand its spin-offs.

However, this isn’t to say the writer isn’t versed in the shifting trends, but this hasn’t stopped him from keeping one practice, often considered a relic from the past era, relevant to his works.
Chuck Lorre isn’t giving up on vanity cards
Prior to the rise of the streaming era, most TV shows incorporated brief vanity cards, either at the beginning or the end of a show. But studios now hardly bother incorporating vanity cards, as streaming platforms often encourageviewers to move on to the next episode and“actively dissuade viewers from reading end credits”.

On the flip side,Chuck Lorrehasn’t given up on this practice yet, as his recent show,Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage, witnessed his vanity card. He added (viaVariety):
You watch television. You know the credits are gone, and a vanity card? That’s from another era. But you know, I’m trying to keep it alive.

Having also included it in his Max show,Bookie, Lorre clarified that he hadn’t heard anything from Max regarding his specificBookieCard, which highlighted this issue, adding,“So I don’t know if that’s a good or bad thing”.
As for the industry’s growing disinterest toward sitcoms in the post-streaming era, Lorre couldn’t care less about the shifting trends.

Chuck Lorre is only interested in telling great stories
When asked about his viewpoint on the industry’s stance on sitcoms in the modern era, Lorre responded“F— ’em”(viaEW). The showrunner, who is currently preoccupied with hisTBBTexpansions, expressed that he doesn’t concern himself with the industry practices, as at the core, he enjoys telling a story that is worth telling.

He explained:
You’re asking me if I have a macro view of these things, I don’t. I try and pursue things that I’m excited about that I think are wonderful, that working with people that I love and admire and telling stories that I think are great stories to tell, and the potential of making people laugh is a wonderful thing to do. When you come home at night, did you make people laugh? That’s not a bad day.
While vanity cards and sitcoms might no longer be the dominant force on the small screen, this hasn’t impacted Lorre’s dedication to telling stories.
