Director Christopher Nolan has made films on some of the most unique concepts, resulting in an interesting filmography for the acclaimed director. However, Nolan’s filmography could have included one sci-fi blockbuster that was eventually directed by Steven Spielberg. Nonetheless, Nolan did not seem interested in directing the project for one reason.

According to reports, Nolan was once in contention to direct the 2018 science fiction action filmReady Player One. However, Nolan declined the offer because of his desire to pursue original concepts, paving the way for Spielberg to take the director’s chair. Ready Player Oneis a science-fiction action film based on author Ernest Cline’s book of the same name. A film adaptation of the novel was first reported to be in development in 2010 at Warner Bros. In 2014, Warner Bros was reportedly looking at directorChristopher Nolanto helm the project.
According to a report fromCollider, Nolan was fresh off the release of his blockbuster sci-fi filmInterstellar. The studio was reportedly interested in having Nolan direct the adaptation ofReady Player Onebefore he moved on to work on one of his original ideas.

However, the report also stated that Nolan was not interested in directing the project, primarily because of his desire to work on original concepts. Meanwhile, Warner Brosreportedlyalso sought directors such as Robert Zemeckis, Edgar Wright, Matthew Vaughn, and Peter Jackson.

Ultimately, Academy Award-winnerSteven Spielbergcame on board as director in March 2015. The film emerged as a major commercial success,grossing$607.9 million at the worldwide box office. Nonetheless, it would have been interesting to see what Nolan would have brought to the table, particularly because of his affinity for 80s pop culture.
Steven Spielberg Provides Update on the Much-AwaitedReady Player OneSequel
After the critical and commercial success ofReady Player One, a sequel wasannouncedto be in development in December 2020. Author Ernest Cline released a sequel to his original book which was also published in 2020. However, updates regarding the film adaptation of the sequel have been few and far between.
In March 2024, director Steven Spielberg provided a positive update on the development of the sequel. Tentatively titledReady Player Two, the sequel was confirmed to be alive and in active development by Spielberg.

Spielberg made the above statement in a report from Showbiz 411 (viaIGN) confirming that the project was still in the early stages of development. However, the report also stated that Spielberg will not be coming on board as the director for the sequel.

Instead, theJurassic Parkdirector will only be serving as a producer for the second installment. As a result, the director’s chair for the sequel is once again empty. Therefore, it will be interesting to see if there is any chance of the studio securing Nolan’s services for the sequel after failing to do so for the first installment.
