BorderlandsDirector Discussed His Take On Cate Blanchett’s Post-Apocalyptic Movie

In an interview withIGN, directorEli Rothgives the lowdown onBorderlandsand shares his approach to helming the movie while considering the original game version. He noted that he retained many aspects from the game so fans might recognize them, but introduced new concepts as well that the audience would find interesting.

“There are certain things that we kept very, very close, but I really worked with [Gearbox Software CEO] Randy Pitchford, and he goes, ‘Think of it like Marvel, where the comics are their own canon and the movies are their own canon, and you don’t have to be married to it. The games are going to be the games and the movie’s, the movie, and if they continue it, great.’”

He asserted that he wants the movie to stand for itself and not just become a live-action version of the game that follows the same narrative. With this, fans can expect to see many surprises and new things that they have not yet experienced before. Meanwhile, there will be loads of references to the game itself.

“So we could use certain things, but I didn’t want to have to be too slavish. I didn’t just want to film the game. We wanted to tell a great story on its own, but of course, it’s loaded with Easter eggs for the fans. It’s a big movie.”

It seems like even the star power of Blanchett cannot convince people to buy tickets and get seated at the theaters. It is not clear yet as to why fans are not keen on seeing the post-apocalyptic film, but one thing’s for sure – it is one of the many existing game franchises that surprisingly has not yet made it to the big screen.

Borderlandsis aiming for a worldwide theatrical release on July 18, 2025.
