Unlike the originalCastlevaniaseasons 1 and 2,Castlevania: Nocturnefell overwhelmingly short and has no hopes of saving at this point. The story feels very weak, and the characters are shallow, the dialogue is a bit clichéd, and even the pacing’s really clumsy.

However, one can also notice that enough effort was put into this latest season by the Studio itself, just in the hope of a surge in popularity. There are a few good moments here and there, but all thanks to the amazing animation and the staff from the studio working on this adaptation.

The animation temporarily savedCastlevania: Nocturnefrom an immediate downfall

The originalCastlevaniaseries took a rather disappointing turn after its second season. Seasons 3 and 4 relied quite heavily on the show’s animation to carry the story, which had started to lose its momentum.

One of the major mistakes in the later seasons wasthe introduction of new charactersthat felt more like irrelevant NPCs rather than meaningful additions to the story. The two LGBTQ+ vampires, in particular, felt like they contributed nothing to the plot. Meanwhile, characters like Carmilla showed promise, but Alucard was woefully underutilized in Season 3. The Trevor and Sypha subplot was also a snooze-fest.

Although it has way better animation than the first season, the story ofCastlevania: Nocturnestill lacks something. It’s somewhat similar to how even the original series’ later seasons relied heavily on their animation for the narrative to be carried along. Although it is certainly quite beautiful, no amount of great visuals can help the story’s shortcomings.

Bad writing made the later seasons ofCastlevaniathis underwhelming

Even the most beloved stories on this planet might have mistakes here and there, which one simply ignores for how great the overall narrative is. But still, bad writing may exist in every piece of media! Just because someone likes something doesn’t make it objectively good. When you take a story apart, there are some pretty basic elements that make it good and bad.

So similarly, the narrative isn’t exactly convincing inCastlevania: Nocturne; it doesn’t matter how it got to this point because the writing here is simply bad enough to be seen as amateur fanfiction.

If one does enjoy the series, that is perfectly fine, but one should not expect it to be free of criticism. Any legitimate issues concerning the writing, plot, or characters should be talked about in a constructive manner of speech.

The idea that “let people enjoy things” means to protect a work from criticism is a major misconception. Criticism and discussion are part of how we interact with stories and each other, and everyone should have the freedom to have an honest conversation about the flaws of any work.
