Anyone who’s been gaming on PC for long enough probably has some rough memories of Games for Windows LIVE, and it’s back from the dead to cause new issues for some Capcom games.

Back in 2021, Capcom removed several of its games that used GFWL from sale on Steam, including the original version ofStreet Fighter IV,Street Fighter x Tekken,Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City, andthe first two Lost Planet games, the second of which is the main point of contention today.

Not every game that used the service was taken down, and some, likeResident Evil 5, were updated to use Valve’s Steamworks system, but others listed above remained unavailable for purchase.

Those unavailable games, aside from Street Fighter IV, which has largely been replaced by the newer Ultra Street Fighter IV, received updates today to finally remove GFWL (reported byIGN), but forLost Planet 2specifically,the removal has caused some extra issues, essentially making the game unplayable.

A Co-Op Game With No Co-Op

With the removal of GFWL from Lost Planet 2, not only haveplayers’ existing save files been rendered inaccessible, forcing them to start anew, but the game’s online functionality has also been completely removed.

Lost Planet 2 is primarily a co-op game, with its limited single-player mode existing primarily to get players situated in the game’s world and ready for the multiplayer mode.

Being 15 years old at this point, the game’s playerbase at this point is small but loyal, and this update four years after the game was taken off the store to deal with GFWL has obviouslynot gone over wellwith them.

Resident Evil 9 Teased By Capcom as Resident Evil 4 Remake Sales Surpass 10 Million Units

Capcom shared a video, expressing gratitude to fans for helping Resident Evil 4 Remake reach 10 million players.

As one commenter on Reddit writes,“…they got rid of the online functionality in a game that is intended to be played in online co-op?”

Lost Planet 2 was released long beforethe modern style of live-service gamebecame a thing, but it’s still yet another example of the ultimate fate of those and any other online-focused games once theironline functionality is inevitably shut down.

At least in this case, there’s some hope that the game and its multiplayer might become available once more at some point with Steamworks integration, as happened with some other Capcom games, but for now, Lost Planet 2 is left as a co-op-focused game with no co-op.
