One of the craziest things about theCall Of Dutyfranchise is just how much oversaturation there has been with the naming of these titles. It’s getting harder and harder to distinguish them from each other as, after all, we’ve now had about six differentModern Warfaretitles, and the upcoming Black Ops is being calledBlack Ops 7.

But, within these subfranchises, it’s always been a breath of fresh air when something new is released. Even if there wasn’t the biggest fan approval for titles likeAdvanced Warfare,Infinite Warfare, orGhosts, the unique mechanics and stories in each are often a standout from the rest of the franchise.

Black Ops 7 Developers Are Still Working To Get The Game On New Console

The surprise announcement of Black Ops 7 revealed that the game is coming to Xbox and PlayStation, but not the Nintendo Switch.

Recently, a somewhat reputable COD leaker, aspointed out byInsider Gaming, stated thatthe next Call of Duty by Sledgehammer Games, a core COD developer behindWW2,Vanguard, and the most recentMW3, will feature their next game as an entirely new subfranchise within Call Of Duty.

Now, a few things need to be made clear before we delve into the leak. First of all, it is worth noting that no official statement has been issued by Microsoft, Activision, or Sledgehammer themselves. However, if this leak is accurate, it could potentially be an interesting change-up for theCOD series.

The leak itself suggests that the upcoming game will be set in a modern combat setting, which means boots-on-the-ground combat and some small technological advantages, such as drone strikes and other elements of contemporary military operations.

One part of the leak that has been getting a lot of attention is the promise for martial arts such as “‘karate kicks’ and ‘karate chops.’” Nevertheless, I would guess this is just a small, unremarkable flourish added to the leak for its catchiness.

We’re already paying $80 for Call of Duty, and now ads are shoved down our throats? Come on, man!

Additionally, the exclusion of zombies may be a dealbreaker for some. Still, most other one-off subfranchise COD releases don’t have zombie modes either – they’re usually saved for specific COD releases like theupcoming Black Ops 7.

The Future of Call of Duty

The promise of an entirely new subfranchise means that this will be separate not only from other titles like Modern Warfare but also from anything else under the COD name.Although it may borrow gameplay elements and characters, the promise of a new subfranchise is always the promise of something a little more innovative.

But, boots-on-the-ground doesn’t mean the title will be an immediate win. After all, the last few games made by Sledgehammer, such as Vanguard and MW3, have beenanything but winsfor the franchise, catching near-universal flak for being unpolished or unremarkable.

Is this a step in the right direction? With how little this leak has to go off of, there’s really no answer, butI would guess that it’s going to take a lot more effort to truly impress the COD fanbase, especially with a game labeled “Black Ops 7” right around the corner.
