Robert Downey Jr.’s return to the MCU and Hugh Jackman coming back as Wolverine thrilled a lot of fans. However, some people are really attached to certain iconic scenes with these characters and, despite all the exciting new stuff the studio is rolling out, they’re not feeling as enthusiastic.

The internet is buzzing with endless discussions, but one thing is clear: some fans are frustrated with their own high expectations. Pleasing Marvel fans isn’t as easy as it used to be.
Hugh Jackman And Robert Downey Jr.’s Return To The MCU
Comic Con 2024 in San Diego was packed with news, but two highlights stood out: theDeadpool & Wolverinepanel and theRusso Brothers‘ announcement of the newAvengers: DoomsdayandAvengers: Secret Warsfilms, featuring the return ofRobert Downey Jr.to the MCU.
Since the multiverse became official, there’s been a lot of speculation about the return of characters. Now, there’s a good chance and a good excuse to bring back, for example, characters who had died. Iron Man was a top pick for fans, and over time, a few comments here and there, even from Marvel presidentKevin Feige, raised their hopes.

WithHugh Jackmanofficially returning as Wolverine, it seemed like anything could really happen. If Jackman was back, anyone could come back. However, despite all the positive reviews for the newDeadpool & Wolverine, nothing in the story is connected to Logan’s past. In the new movie, the X-Men superhero is a variant from a timeline that existed long before the events of his solo movie.
When it comes to Downey, his return isn’t quite what many fans hoped for. Tony Stark appears to be really dead, and moving forward, the villain Doctor Doom is taking his place. But are Marvel fans actually happy with this? Opinions are divided, and some still feel that Logan and Tony Stark’s endings were undermined by these developments.

Were Expectations Let Down With Hugh Jackman And Robert Downey Jr.?
The deaths of Tony Stark and Logan were incredibly impactful and undeniable for many fans, if not all. The MCU has a knack for introducing characters and building their legacies over time, often spanning years. The truth is that this approach helps to create a strong connection between the audience and each character.
Because of this, whenever something significant happens with the character lineup, expectations are immediately set, no matter what. Also, fans always expect greatness, especially from the MCU, which has established itself as a top-tier studio in delivering memorable moments.

For many, the view is that if themultiverseis open and the opportunity is there, it should be used. In the comics, for example, there’s a version where Tony Stark is actually avariant of Doctor Doom.

On the other hand, bringing the character back from their last appearance would be a great fan service, and could enhance the overall plot of Marvel’s current phase in film and TV. The same applies to Logan, who has become a classic character and predates the current generation. Bringing him back to life is essentially a guaranteed recipe for success.
Seeing these iconic characters return can offer a sense of continuity and connection to previous storylines, and also because Marvel fans are known for their dedication to the original narratives.

That’s why some fans felt a bit let down by the changes that came with the actors’ returns. It seemed like the final scenes of these characters had been rendered meaningless, and their deaths weren’t truly honored by just focusing on their variant stories. However, others seem to appreciate the MCU’s creative direction:
That’s why I stopped watching anything after end game and logan

The actors returning to play different characters does not change anything in these two scenes…
They honor Logan’s death just fine in the new Deadpool

Pleasing Marvel’s audience has definitely become a tough challenge, as shown by the mixed reactions to the studio’s latest projects. Still, they’re pushing ahead, and bringing back actors like Jackman and Downey might be paying off. It looks like Kevin Feige is starting to figure out how to use character variants effectively. Now, it’s just a matter of waiting to see how it all plays out.
