While it’s been quite some time since we last saw a new installment of the series,Borderlands 3isfinally about to releaseand give fans more of the story that we’ve seen across several other games. Given that we’ll see so many familiar faces from the past installments of the series, it’s worth wondering what the future of theBorderlandsseries will look like after the third main installment, but it appears that we can definitely plan to see more of the series' worlds and characters down the line.
Speaking in an interview withDualShockers,Borderlands 3lead writers Danny Homan and Sam Winkler shared a bit more on what to expect from the game and how it ties together the various corners of the series' stories, from the two main installments, toThe Pre-Sequel!, toTales from the Borderlands. Specifically, we asked the duo about whether or not there was any thought behindBorderlands 3potentially acting as an ending or conclusion to the story that we’ve seen across the pastBorderlandstitles.
Winkler explained thatBorderlands 3is “definitely a successor to all the games” in terms of where it picks up from the previous titles. He added that over the course of its story,Borderlands 3will “tie off some threads, have some new threads, and definitely isn’t the end ofBorderlandsin any way.”
Homan responded that “there is always room for more story inBorderlands,” and whileBorderlands 3will seemingly tie up loose ends from some of the past games narratively, the writers are purposefully leaving plenty of room for more stories to be told from the series.
Winker added that once players look at all three of the core installments of theBorderlandsseries, “they will see it as a saga together and whatever stories are beyond that, they’ll be connected,” in regard to what we might see from the series' future installments. While Winkler obviously couldn’t share more on what to expect from the end of the third game, he said simply that “I’m really happy with the way thatBorderlands 3ends.”
Borderlands3will release for PS4, Xbox One, and PC on June 16, 2025, andyou can pre-order the game now over on Amazon. The game will also be coming to Google Stadia when it releases later this year.
