In a recentblog post,Bethesdahas confirmed that it’s going to remove “illegal mods” fromFallout 76, meaning mods that are currently incompatible with the weapons they’re attached to but were attached in the early days of the game back when players had those options.
The post stated that the goal is to “ensure that every single player is using and trading the same items and has the same advantages as you.” It goes on to say that “players who are in possession of a weapon with a mod that cannot be equipped naturally to the weapon may notice a damage decrease to the weapon, and the mod will no longer exist.”

This update is particularly relevant because there are certain gun and mod combinations (which are no longer available) that result in ridiculously heightened damage output, so much so that it can kill powerful bosses in seconds. The culprits are mainly laser weapons that have a mod attached to them that makes their bullets explode on contact, dealing area damage. When combined with another mod that doubles a gun’s fire rate, the stronger laser guns become so powerful that many gameplay moments lose all difficulty or excitement.
The Fallout 76 blog post didn’t mention any sort of compensation, meaning that legacy players will get something that they obtained legitimately completely taken away from them without getting anything in return. However, most of the community appears to be pleased, with many players onRedditcelebrating the fix, calling the mod situation “one of the oldest, ugliest, and most divisive problems” of Fallout 76. Fans expressed how it simply wasn’t fun for most players in a large raid when a final boss gets destroyed in less than a minute; many hope that this is a sign of things to come and that a larger weapon rebalancing patch is in the works.
Bethesda’s blog post also detailed other relevant tidbits of information. Starting November 15, players will be able to claim the Redd-Upper Auto-Axe skin for free, and completing dailies and weeklies with the skin applied will allow them to unlock the Fanatic Stalker Outfit, seen above. Players will have until November 28 to do so.
