Who Is The Emperor Now?

The Emperor is a Mind Flayer. At first, he appears to the character asthe Dream Visitor. This is a character that you get to design, so they can appear however you want to start off. Their identity can be changed in regards to their sex, race, and appearance. The game purposefully does not tell you who this character is, that way you will have to decide for yourself whether you should trust them or not.

His Time As The Emperor

Before becoming the Dream Visitor, he was infected with a Mind Flayer Parasite while he wasat Moonrise Towers. He was saved from the colony by Ansur, the fabled dragon. However, the two got into a fight, and he killed Ansur. He thenbuilt a monument to him beneath Baldur’s Gate. He got into Baldur’s Gate politics for some time and worked under the name “The Emperor.” He was even there long enough tomake himself a hideout. Later on, he stole the Astral Prism (the Artefact) from the Githyanki, and used it to protect himself while the Netherbrain was sending out commands to those with Illithid Parasites all around the Sword Coast.

His Time As The Dream Visitor

This leads to his time as the Dream Visitor. The Emperor stayed hidden in the Artefact in order to protect the player character and their companions from the Mind Flayer Tadpoles in their brains. Throughout Act I & II, he is shown to be the Dream Visitor you created at the beginning. You won’t see The Emporer until Act 3.

Who Was The Emperor?

Before The Emperor became who he is now, he was arguably the most important person in the Baldur’s Gate franchise. The Emperor was none other than Balduran himself, the founder of Baldur’s Gate. In the official story, Balduran went off exploring the Isle of Balduran and never came back. However, the truth is that he made it back from that voyage and found Moonrise Towers, where he was infected.

How Do You Learn About Balduran’s Identity?

Some players never get to learn the truth about The Emperor and Balduran. The only way to find this out is by making your way to the Wyrmway and seeing the corpse of Ansur the dragon. Upon approaching it, Ansur will come to life and detect Balduran. Ansur is the one who will reveal that The Emperor was Balduran, but that his dear friend was lost so long ago. The fight between the two had been over Balduran wanting to accept his fate as a Mind Flayer. Before he transformed, Ansur and Balduran didn’t want him to experience ceremorphosis. However, once it happened, Balduran changed and accepted his fate.
