If you’ve spent any time in Cumberland in good company, you know the feeling of waking up with nothing in your pockets and a rowdy crowd nearby. It would be lovely to discuss hangover cures and the best dives in the real-world region, but Atomfall is our current focus.

Atomfall has you come to your senses inside a bunker, with no idea who you are or how you are supposed to survive. Some of the local population is not particularly sympathetic to your plight, though, which is bad news for you since they’re frequently armed.

Atomfall is shaping up to be a nuclear-fuelled spectacle, and we stay down with Ben Fisher to find out more about this amazing prospect.

In Atomfall, like anygood post-nuclear disaster game, ammunition and curatives are not abundant. Even after you’re done with this guide and have something of an arsenal going on, I recommend treating combat as a last resort thing. You can’t use these rusty masterpieces if you have no ammo or no pulse of your own.

The name, of course, bears no resemblance to American manufacturer Remington, which coincidentally has also manufactured single-shot shotguns.

This is the first gun you can get your hands on within a minute of leaving the bunker.

Head down the footpath on your left and inspect the house on your left.

Once you are inside, wrap around the corner to find a box. Collect the supplies on top of it, then climb on.

Your next step is to vault through the little window to your right, revealing a room with some ammunition, assorted tidbits, and a certifiably dead man.

Loot our hero to pick up the Lemington single-shot shotgun, then unlock the door to your right to leave.

Atomfall Mk VI Revolver-5-1

This is an awkward weapon for the most part. At short ranges, the Lemington sends most people to their graves, but its long reload time makes you vulnerable to a lucky survivor or friends.

If you try to put some distance between you and the target, the gun is closer to a firecracker than a lethal weapon. Still, it beats using your fists, so quit complaining.

Terrier .22 Rifle

The .22 long rifle round is the most popular cartridge in the world because it’s cheap, reasonably accurate, and… Well, that’s it.

Your first opportunity to grab this vaguely workable gun is in the abandoned houses in Slatten Dale, right outside of Wyndham.

Head past the broken-down truck on the road and look for a watermill to your left. Head to the back of the building it’s attached to and crawl under the boards.

Once inside, watch out for a tripwire and a nail board waiting to catch you unaware. You can avoid them by hugging the right-side wall.

Past the tripwire, on the far corner of the room to your left, you will find a rusty Terrier .22 rifle and a few spare rounds.

This single-round bolt-action rifle has the lowest damage output on this list, but it is the only easily accessible gun that works well from longer ranges. It will take more than a couple of shots to bring anyone down, so be ready to switch to another weapon if you get rushed.

Mk. VI Revolver

How about a six-shooter to get your Cumberland Dirty Harry on?

As you stroll down Slatten Dale toward the village of Wyndham, you will come across a train yard. This area has one too many outlaws who are not afraid to blast your head off, so exercise caution.

Opposite the train yard is a house, which you can enter from its south side. The “PISS OFF” graffiti signals that you are welcome to come in and take what’s inside.

Walk in, then hug the wall to your left until you wrap around to another room and find a flight of stairs.

It will look like a dead end up the stairs and to the right, but the far wall has a hole you can squeeze through (provided you don’t have one too many Cornish pasties on the way).

Look to your right to find a narrow passage you can squeeze through.

On the other side of it is a Mk: VI revolver and some ammunition.

The Webley revolver stayed in service with the British Army into the 1960s, when it made way for the Hi-Power semi-automatic pistol.

It fires slower and is less accurate than the Hi-Power, but the Mk revolver makes up for that by hitting like a bag of bricks. Its main drawback is the reload time, as you put the rounds in individually.

Hi-Power 9mm Pistol

The Interchange

This 9mm pistol is the first weapon you can find that does not push you into sticky situations that threaten to lessen your life expectancy.

Unlike other weapons, you pick up the Hi-Power naturally during your firstforay into the Interchange. I entered through Wyndham, butwhichever your route of choice, the process is the same: go in, then follow the signs to the central processor.

After going past the blast doors, follow the signs on the ground that say “OBERON”.

All main doors in the bunker will be offline, but someone thankfully jammed a box under one of them. Crawl under the door, then follow the corridor until you reach a flight of stairs.

Go up, then head straight to the Central Processor room, where you will find a pair of dead scientists. The body leaning against the control panel contains supplies, an atomic battery, and Cumberland’s finest rusty Hi-Power pistol.

The Hi-Power is not as accurate as the .22 rifle at range, and it deals considerably less close-up damage than the shotgun. However, this pistol has a fast enough rate of fire to make up for that. Yes, your first shot isn’t bringing anyone down, but the second or third one fired right after it will.

Bullpup Assault Rifle

Casterfell Woods

When most people hear ‘British bullpup assault rifle’, they think of the L85, a weapon that surpassed its troubled youth in the 1980s and is still in use today.

In Atomfall, you have to settle for the JM-3, a gun so ridiculously good for the early game that it’ll bring you to tears whenever you’re out of ammunition.

This weapon is available to you free of charge in the Casterfell Woods, bythe entrance of the dam, but getting it involves some caution. Since you’re already in the neighborhood,this is a good chance to talk to Mother Yago as well.

Your first step is to sneak by the ferals in the tunnel, which alternatively, can be dealt with through violence, provided you stay out of range of their deadly spit attack.

Once you’re in the clear, keep the garden complex to your left as you head north. The area you’re looking for is marked by three hives.

You have two choices here: rush in, or thin out the swarm. I threw a grenade in there, which got rid of enough of them to make a safe approach.

The former owner of the rifle is lying down in the middle of the patch, and won’t mind you too much. The druids to the east, on the other hand, might take issue, but they will not attack unless you come close.

This gun is a game-changer in Atomfall, equipped with a large magazine, a very high rate of fire, good accuracy, and a low-magnification scope. The only issue you may come across here is that you will eat through ammunition very quickly if you get too excited.

Did you know that the JM-3’s real-life counterpart, the EM-2 rifle, was initially selected to be the British Army’s service rifle? The decision was quickly overturned in favor of an FN FAL variant as part of a drive for NATO standardization.

The Commonwealth version of the rifle had dimensions adjusted to the imperial system, and ended up having next to no parts compatibility with its metric cousin. Go figure.
