Assassin’s Creed fans have been hungry for information on the newest title in the series, Assassin’s Creed Mirage, and developer/publisher Ubisoft delivered Saturday with its reveal of a full trailer. The trailer granted credibility to several rumors that have been circulating across the Internet in the past few days.
Unveiled at the online Ubisoft Forward games showcase, the trailer focuses on a young Basim Ibn Ishak, who made his debut in 2020’s Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. The segment’s presenters revealed that the game will be a prequel story for Basim, taking place some 20 years before the events of Valhalla, and will guide players through his transformation from street thief to Master Assassin.

The opening scene of the trailer shows Basim racing through the streets of Baghdad — confirming another rumor regarding the game’s location — before being caught by guards. He is, however, rescued from the shadows by a mysterious trainer in the all-too-familiar assassin’s garb. That trainer, as it turns out, is Roshan, his mentor, who will be played by Shohreh Aghdashloo (House of Sand and Fog). The trailer then moves to a training montage between the two before moving onto Basim’s own parkour and gadget-based assassinations.
News about the 13th game in the series first broke under the working title Assassin’s Creed Rift, and teaser images have been slowly trickling through to the public since last week. Just one day after the first teaser images started leaking out, Ubisoft went ahead andofficially announcedthe title on September 2. The publisher had been promising a large reveal of information on the game since an announcement in June that it would be included in Saturday’s showcase.

Additionally, multiple reports had already surfaced that the PlayStation store had unintentionally jumped the gun onreleasing the game’s descriptionin early September. Among these reports was the identity of the main character, setting, and back-to-basics style of gameplay and storytelling. Narrative Director Sarah Beaulieu confirmed during the event that the team wanted to bring the series back to an action-adventure style, and they have succeeded with Mirage. Despite the success of Valhalla as compared to some other titles near the middle of the series’ run, reports had been circulating across the Internet for some time that Mirage would be a throwback to Assassin’s Creed’s roots, eschewing the RPG-centric, level-up style of character building prevalent over the last few games in favor of the more classic, stealth-based action-adventure style.
Information leaks had been suggesting that the game would take place in Baghdad during an anarchistic period between 860 and 870 AD. The series has showcased locations across the world during its run. On the choice of Baghdad, Beaulieu said “It’s a very dense city where you’re going to meet a lot of different people.”
The game’s story is predicted by sources – including twitter userAdrien Perea, who has also released leaks on Ubisoft’s upcoming Skull and Bones and Assassin’s Creed 1 remake – to take around 17 to 20 hours to complete; a much shorter adventure than Valhalla and Odyssey, which should present the offsetting qualities of quality over quantity of playtime. This is one of the few widespread rumors not confirmed during the live event.
