In the manga scene, Takehiko Inoue is one of the most prolific manga artists there has ever been. Most of us know him for his two iconic basketball series,Slam DunkandReal;however, his real masterpiece is a samurai epic titledVagabond. The work has been considered a phenomenal piece of fiction, which none has been able to replicate since then.

Takehiko Inoue’s Vagabond is an iconic piece of fiction

Despite its greatness, the series does not have an anime adaptation; after all, they have big shoes to fill, where everything needs to be spot on. Now, in an interesting turn of events, Pascal Charrue, the co-founder of Fortiche, has expressed his views on wanting to create an adaptation of the iconic manga.

Fortiche’s desire to create an anime adaptation might be bad news for Vagabond fans

Getting inspired by Eiji Yoshikawa’s 1939 novelMusashi,Takehiko Inouetook his time to come up with his own unique story that revolved around a samurai, Miyamoto Musashi, and the aftermath following the Battle of Sekigahara. The story is set in feudal Japan, where chaos and ruthless brutality were on full display in the samurai epic.

The 1998 manga features a multi-layered story that focuses heavily on the growth of its characters, where they learn from their hubris after falling from the heights of grace and living by their code of honor, Bushido.

Additionally, with breathtaking art and being highly realistic, the power of its story can be felt as one chooses to read the work as time progresses. The work has been so great that after publishing Chapter 327, it went on an indefinite hiatus, where itfaced the consequences of setting the bar too high.

Now, during an exclusive interview withCrunchyroll, the interviewer asked Pascal Charrue about which manga he would like to adapt with his team. The answer was a tough one for the co-founder, but he set his sights on the work as he was moved by its greatness. He said,

That’s a tough question. The first adaptation that comes to mind would be Vagabond by Takehiko Inoue. It’s a masterpiece with incredible depth and stunning artwork that would be fascinating to bring to life in animation.

While he did address the issue of how adaptations are not so simple to make, where pacing“doesn’t always translate well to animation.”

However, the question still remains if the French studio, Fortiche, is the right candidate to adapt the iconic work.

Can Fortiche do justice to Takehiko Inoue’sVagabond?

The idea of Fortiche adapting Inoue-Sensei’s underrated magnum opus does sound alluring to the ear. Moreover, it is intriguing to know that the French Studio is behindArcane, one of themost popular works of recent times. Moreover, their intriguing art style set a new benchmark in the animation industry as they seamlessly integrate 2D and 3D animation in rich and colorful character-driven narratives.

This would make many think that the studio is indeed the right candidate to adapt the work, correct? Mainly becauseVagabondalso features a character-driven storyline. However, Otakus might be disappointed to learn that Fortiche’s ambition to adapt the work is not enough because they will not do justice to the work.

While Charrue would ensure that his animation studio would do everything in its capacity to make their work closely follow the source material, their art style is nothing that matches the manga. The studio is more flashy than the Sound Hashira, Tengen Uzui, as they believe in being more on the big and bold side.

Vagabond,on the other hand, is more minimal and became popular among otakus. The readers are captivated by the visually breathtaking and incredibly quiet moments, carefully brought to life by its author.

If asked as a fan, getting an anime adaptation of the age-old manga sounds exciting to the ears. However, at the same time, sacrificing the story’s art for afaithful adaptation is not a good deal. Thus, making Fortiche not a suitable candidate to work on the series.

Vagabondcan be read on VIZ Media, whileArcanecan be streamed on Netflix.
