As last week’s only major release, it should come as no surprise that EA and BioWare’sAnthemdebuted at the top of the sales chart in the UK last week taking down theprevious week’s winnerFar Cry New Dawnin the process. Despite the victory, the first reported physical sales forAnthemmay be raising some red flags.
As reported byEurogamer,Anthem’sfirst-week physical sales were only half that ofMass Effect Andromeda, BioWare’s 2017 release. While digital sales have increased quite a bit over the past few years and surely helped make up this gap a bit more, it’s doubtful thatAnthemsold enough in the digital space to equal the release ofAndromeda. ComparingAnthem, a new IP, to that ofMass Effect Andromedais perhaps a bit unfair considering the latter is a mega-popular franchise with millions of fans.
Still, it’s still a bit concerning start forAnthem.Resident Evil 2still remains the year’s fastest-selling game in the UK, as well, ahead ofAnthem. We’ll have to wait and see ifAnthemcan hitEA’s projections of between 5 and 6 million copiesbefore the end of March.
As for other notable entries on the sales chart this week, there’s not much to write home about.Far Cry New Dawn,FIFA 19,Red Dead Redemption 2, andMetro Exodusrounded out the top five for the week in that respective order.
