Why Angelina Jolie Doesn’t Believe Her Maleficent Role Fulfilled Her True Hollywood Desire: ‘I also still want to play a villain’
Fans loved the chemistry between the main characters and expected them to return to a sequel, especially afterthey became a real-life couple. However, the sequel never happened, and Jolie explained in a 2010 interview with Vanity Fair as to why the potential sequel never happened. She shared that different people have tried to come up with a sequel story unsuccessfully.
Jolie shared that it would’ve been strange for the characters to have kids in the potential sequel. They shared kids in real lifeat the time, and Jolie felt that it would’ve become too personal. She felt as if the film drew too much from her love life. Moreover, she added that the discussions didn’t produce any original idea for such a film. She shared withVanity Fair:

People have tried. And it’s strange: do we have kids in the movie? We’ve thought about that, but it becomes personal now that we actually have kids. And if we work on it, we pull from our own life, which is funny to us, but you feel strange sharing too much. We did ask somebody to look into Mr. & Mrs. to see if they could crack a sequel, but there wasn’t anything original. It was just, Well, they’re going to get married, or they’ve got kids, or they get separated. Never great.
While a sequel for the film never happened, Francesca Sloane andDonald Glover‘s 2024 series of the same name got its inspiration from Jolie & Pitt’s film. In the Prime Video series, Glover and Maya Erskine appear as two strangers who are paired up as a duo of spies forced to live undercover as a married couple.

Jolie suggested that they would rather play bad guys trying to kill each other. She wanted a fun and aggressive project, instead of a full-on romantic project. She shared:
When you’re a couple, there are certain things people don’t want to see you do. It becomes too indulgent, too personal. I don’t think people want to see people who are really together intimate on-screen. Maybe we have to play bad guys that attempt to kill each other, so it’s just fun and aggressive, not dealing with some man-woman deal.

However, Jolie and Pitt got together for the 2015 romantic dramaBy the Sea. It ended up being a disaster, which proved Jolie’s prediction right, as people didn’t want to see things get real between the couple on-screen.
Mr. & Mrs. Smithis now available for streaming on Netflix.
