Age of Wonders 4 Forced March Empire Development

Needless to say, moving multiple armies from one end of the map to the other is quite a hassle until you gain access to teleporters. But while teleporters only become available toward the end game, there’s a different mechanic known as Forced March that can be unlocked much faster.

How To Force March Units

Forced March can be unlocked from the Empire Development tree. The tree is split into seven different branches, six of which contain skills pertaining to the six affinities. The seventh branch is where you’ll find general skills that can be unlocked by any faction regardless of its affinity. This is where you’re able to unlock Forced March. The skill can be found toward the end of the branch andcosts 150 Imperium to learn.

The Empire Development menu unlocks on turn three of every campaign. If you hover over the skill in the early stages of the game, the prompt will say that it’s going to take you close to 50 turns to unlock it. That’s not really the case.Once you start earning more Imperium, that number will gradually go down. In most cases, Forced March will become available anywhere between turn 30 and turn 40, possibly even sooner if you decided to rush for it.

Forced March Pros And Cons

Forced March allows units to move twice as far as usual, however,it also drains 30 of their hitpoints and makes them exhausted for two turnsin the process. Those drawbacks are certainly nothing to scoff at, but this is one of those scenarios where the pros outweigh the cons. Forced March is useful not just for covering large distances in a small amount of time, but also for pursuing fleeing armies or escaping armies that are pursuing you.

It’s important to note that Forced March also eats up some mana every time you use it. The skill only costs 10 mana per unit but adds up quickly when you’re using it on multiple armies. Of course, you can offset that by building certain structures, vassalizing Free Cities, ortrading with major factions. Meanwhile, the hitpoints cost can be offset to some extent byplaying a faction that has the Fast Recuperation trait and the Barbarian culture. Naturally, there are also plenty of healing spells you can use to bring units to full health after they’ve been Forced Marched.
