AI technology has advanced at an astronomical rate in the last few years and as it stands, the mere hint of its use can spark controversy. And spark controversy it has asCatly, a game developed by SuperAuthenti was accused of using AI to create its trailer presented at The Game Awards 2024.

The developers at SuperAuthenti have denied adamantly that it is not the case, and now have even released another trailer for the game on its Steam page. The new trailer features a good amount of the game’s gameplay and features to prove thatCatlyis indeed a legitimate, fully-developed title.

The controversy began whenCatlywas unveiled at The Game Awards, where its initial trailer looked a bit weird. The hyperrealistic cats and dreamlike visuals led many viewers to assume the trailer was AI-generated. People pointed to art inconsistencies and the surreal aesthetic, which resembled AI-generated media.

SuperAuthenti addressed the uproar by updating the game’sSteampage with a fresh gameplay trailer showcasing realistic visuals, cat customization options, and in-game environments. Unlike the original trailer, which many described as surreal and accused of being AI-like, the new footage gave a clearer sense of the game’s mechanics.

Players can now see customizable feline avatars exploring futuristic landscapes and interacting with non-playable characters. The studio also provided new screenshots and revamped the game’s description, offering detailed insights into its gameplay and features, which include farming, racing, and island-building.

It’s going to get harder and harder as AI gets more advanced

SuperAuthenti has repeatedly denied using generative AI or blockchain technology in any aspect ofCatly’s development or promotion. In a statement toIGN, the studio expressed surprise at the allegations, saying that no existing AI tools could produce a trailer of such quality. They also stated that the company has never engaged with blockchain or NFTs.

The situation is not unique toCatly. AI-related controversies are becoming a recurring theme in the gaming industry, as evidenced by the recent backlash against Activision.
