Waltz played the character in director Quentin Tarantino’s critically acclaimed 2009 filmInglourious Basterds, nabbing the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his performance.

During an interview, Waltz was asked if he would be interested in potentially reprising the role of Hans Landa. However, Waltz promptly turned down the idea of returning to the role of the Nazi Colonel. Despite the popularity of Hans Landa, Waltz is firmly against reprising the role in the future. During an interview with/Film, Waltz was asked about appearing in a potential stage adaptation of the movie. However, Waltz cast doubts on reprising his role.

Absolutely not. I have contributed to this whole thing as much as I possibly could. And I will have to let go of that. I will not harp on it. I will not cling to it.

Waltz made the above statement, explaining that he did not want to rest on his former laurels and was looking to leave his work as Hans Landa in the past.

The German actor added that while he would be interested in seeing the film play out and performed on the stage, he wasn’t particularly interested in appearing in the proposed adaption. Therefore, it is safe to say that Waltz felt he hadalready done his best with the iconic villain roleand simply wished to move forward in his career.

During the same interview, Waltz was also asked about landing the role of Hans Landa in theQuentin Tarantino-directed movie. The actor revealed that the filmmaker wanted to be authentic to the characters’ ethnicity while casting the roles. As a result, Waltz felt he was lucky to be German, which qualified him for the part.

However, Waltz revealed that when he was auditioning for the role he wasn’t aware that he was being considered forthe part of Hans Landa. The actor stated that he and several other German actors auditioned for multiple German characters in the movie.

I really didn’t think that they were casting this part when I read it, you know. I just thought they were using that part [of Colonel Hans Landa] for material for the auditions.

Waltz made the above statement, explaining that most of the other German characters did not have a large enough role for their parts to be used in the audition process. Therefore, Waltz thought that he was reading for a different role while auditioning.

Meanwhile, Waltz also praised Tarantino’s script for the movie, revealing that it was written in the director’s handwriting. As a result, the actor’s first impression was that the overall experience Tarantino wanted to create with the movie was extremely personal, which excited him for his role.
