Academy Award-winning filmmaker Bong Joon-ho chose Pattinson to play the lead role in his film titledMickey 17.The film is being described as a sci-fi plot with a complex narrative. A filmmaker of Joon-ho’s stature could have picked any actor in the world for the role. But apparently, there was something that drew him into casting Pattinson.

Mickey 17is an ambitious project in itself. With Joon-ho’s first project sinceParasite, it is something the whole world will have their eyes set on. The storyline is complex, with the 17 in the title implying the number of times Pattinson’s character dies in the film!

The trailer of the upcoming film was shown to theatre owners at CinemaCon and isn’t available for public view yet.Speaking at the conference, Joon-ho was asked what made theTwilightstar the perfect fit to play the titular character ofMickey 17,he replied (viaVariety):

“He’s got this crazy thing in his eyes. I felt like he could do all the different variations of Mickey in the story. He’s such a creative man.”

Pattinson himself is quite fond of Joon-ho, calling the filmmaker his“hero”(viaVariety). Recalling the conversation he had with the director prior to signing the film, Pattinson shared he was told:

“You’re going to love the script, but the part is impossible.”

Mickey 17:Here’s What We Know

Mickey 17is based on Edward Ashton’s novelMickey 7.The protagonist Mickey Barnes signs up for a job on a human expedition sent to a foreign planet. In his own words, which were translated, Joon-ho described the film as a (viaVariety):

“story about a simple man who ultimately ends up saving the world. It’s a strange type of hero’s journey.”

Furthermore, the filmmaker made a slight change to the name of the film from the novel it’s based on. The number changed because Joon-ho  “killed him 10 more times!”Alongside Pattinson, the cast also includes Steven Yeun, Naomi Ackie, Toni Collette, Mark Ruffalo, and Thomas Turgoose.

Pattinson’s phenomenal acting skills and Joon-ho’s remarkable directorial prowess- two mighty forces coming together will surely make up for an enthralling experience.
