Anime characters with a dark past are able to make a better bond with the viewers. It doesn’t matter if it’s a hero or a villain; if a dark past is connected to their story, people sympathize with them and understand why they turn out to be the person they are today. But the writers of some characters took their backstories to a whole new level of agony and suffering.
1. Keyaru (Redo Of Healer)
Keyaro has gone through extreme hardships that one would never ask for even in their dreams. He used to be a very kind-hearted person and pure of heart, but time changed, so did Keyaru.
Keyaro got betrayed, imprisoned, drugged, molested by plenty, beaten, and tortured, this innocent guy has faced every nightmare. All this changed Keyaru to become a completely different man. After all these incidents, he becomes a cruel psychopath full of vengeance and bloodlust.
2. Gyutaro (Demon Slayer)
The demon siblings fromDemon Slayerare hated a lot after their appearance in the Entertainment District Arc. But the viewers changed their perspective after the dark past of the anime character is revealed.
Gyutaro was born to a poor family in the lowest class of the Entertainment District. Poverty was already giving him a hell of a time; his appearance, unpleasant voice, and uncleanliness added to his suffering. He was usually tortured by his mother, who wanted to kill him even before his birth. Later, his mother died of Syphilis. His sister was the only person he ever loved, but she was burned alive. Lucking Daki survived, and later, the two were offered to turn into demons.
3. Ai Enma (Hell Girl)
This dark genre anime was made even darker after fans encountered the backstory of Ai Enma. Her pain and sufferings were so immense that the hatred and vengeance were carried with her even after her death.
Ai was chosen by the people of her village for being sacrificed to the mountain god so they could get a good harvest. Ai’s parents opposed the villagers and arranged for her survival in the woods in which Sentarou helped her.
But her death followed her to the woods when one unfateful day, the villagers followed Santarou and found Ai. She was then buried alive, and Santarou was forced to throw the first shovel of dirt on her face. She believed Santarou betrayed her, which made her suffer even more while she was facing her painful death.
4. Guts (Berserk)
His bad time started the moment he was born. Guts' mother was hung on a tree when he was born. No one cared for the innocent life, and the baby Guts was left there, surrounded by the pool of blood.
A group of mercenaries was passing by, and they noticed the newborn being left alone. Gambino allowed Shisu to take care of the child, acting like her mother. But Guts was destined for more suffering, as her surrogate mother, Shisu, succumbed to the plague.
His sufferings increased as he grew. One night, he was molested by a mercenary who later revealed that Gambino had sold him for a night. Guts lost his leg, after which Gambino starts physically abusing and cursing him. His hate for Guts got so powerful that he even tried to kill him. Poor Guts was devastated by everything going on in his life, after which he kills Gambino.
5. Hyakkimaru (Dororo)
Most characters start to experience a doomed life after passing a few years of their life. But in the case of Hyakkimaru, he started living in hell the moment he was brought to life.
Hyakkimaru’s evil father sold out his own son’s body parts like his skin, ears, eyes, and many of his internal organs to the demons for his own prosperity. Despite being deprived of several internal and external organs, little Hayakkimaru manages to survive. Now, the only motive of his life is to defeat the demons and get back his body parts.
