Tanya DePass, the director ofI Need Diverse Gamesran a live stream that lasted for a little over 10 hours while raising money for The Bail Project which is detailed to be “a nonprofit organization designed to combat mass incarceration by disrupting the money bail systemâone person at a time.” The stream featuredAnimal Crossing: New HorizonsÂand raised over $150,000 while viewers showed support for theBlack Lives Mattermovement that’s currently being amplified across the world.Originally, theTwitch streamkicked offon Tiltifywith a donation goal of $500. As the day progressed the donation total blew way past the target and continued to see support from many viewers. According toone tweet from Tanya, theJustice, Peace, Freedom teamshad collectively raised $168,677 at the end, and it currently sits at $184,374.59 at the time of writing.
At one point, the stream made it ontoTwitch’s frontpageand Tanya thanked numerousCritical Rolemembers for joining the stream and supporting the Black Lives Matter movement. Tanya has been doing a fair number of [now archived] charity streams over the last few months. There’s currently a “Selise’s shields” campaign finding $5,244.69 raised so far for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. The “Selise’s swords” campaign is the above charity stream for The Bail Project.
The Bail Projectexplains that “paying bail for someone in need is an act of resistance against a system that criminalizes race and poverty, and an act of solidarity with local communities and movements for decarceration.” Over the next few years, the goal for the project is to “open dozens of sites in high-need jurisdictions with the goal of paying bail for tens of thousands of low-income Americans, all while collecting stories and data that prove money bail is not necessary to ensure people return to court.”
